Ambien, more commonly known by its generic name Zolpidem is a prescription based medicine which is often given to patients who experience severe insomnia and the inability to sleep. Ambien belongs to the hypnotic class of drugs and activates the GABA neurotransmitter. It then binds the neurotransmitters to the GABA receptors which causes increased GABA activity. This in turn causes the brain to feel peaceful and initiates the sleeping process within 10 to 20 minutes of being consumed.
Ambien and Sleepwalking
There have been numerous cases in which Ambien has been reported to be the cause of sleepwalking. A lot of people have reported to find themselves awake in the middle of doing things they had no recollection of such as eating something or running an errand. Ambien comes with guidelines which inform the patients beforehand the risks of taking it. These risks which are closely related to sleepwalking include:
- Eating: A lot of people feel quite full which leads them to believe that they must have eaten something while sleep walking.
- Talking: A lot of Ambien users report that a close person or a loved one narrates having a conversation with them during the night in the state of sleep.
- Having Sex: A lot of Ambien users have been reported to have sex while sleeping after taking the medication.
- Driving: Many people have been reported to drive while on
Ambien is extremely dangerous as it can lead to serious damage or accidents. Injuries caused due to driving while on Ambien have even gone to court in a lot of cases due to their severity.
Ambien is extremely dangerous and does cause sleepwalking. This is something very alarming for the medical as well as pharmaceutical community extensive research is being undertaken in order to find the root causes of this.
