Many people wake up in the middle of the night due to chest burn causing sleep disruption. Causes of Heartburn
Chest burn is caused due to malfunctioning of the Lower Esophageal Sphincter which opens frequently. The sphincter is the opening into the stomach and once the food passes into the stomach, it is supposed to close down. However, if it opens more frequently, the acids from the stomach can make their way up into the esophagus once a person lies to sleep. The acids can cause severe chest burn and pain.
Hiatal Hernia is another cause of heartburn. The diaphragm works as a shield and keeps the acid from entering into the chest but in Hiatal Hernia, the opening of the stomach moves above the diaphragm causing the acids to enter the chest.
Some other causes of heartburn or Acid Reflux Disease are given below:
- Sleeping immediately after having a meal.
- High intake of acidic substances, citrus fruits, spicy meals, chocolate, mints and onions etc.
- Lying on the back after a heavy meal.
- Too much intake of carbonated drinks, tea or coffee.
- Obesity and pregnancy.
- Smoking and high intake of alcohol.
- Ibuprofen and muscle relaxant medication.
These are the most common causes of heartburn. One can avoid Acid Reflux by scheduling and controlling their diet plan.
Symptoms of Acid Reflux
Acid Reflux is also termed as heartburn and therefore, the most common symptom of Acid Reflux is sleep disruption due to severe chest pain around the heart area. Some other symptoms of acid reflux are as follows:
- Nausea and Blood vomiting
- Loss of weight
- Burps and Hiccups
- Dry coughing and throat soreness.
How to Sleep with Heart Burn
For those who commonly experience night time reflux, it is important to take some precautionary measures to reduce the frequency of such episodes. These precautionary measures include dietary tips as well as daily routine activities. Practicing these tips can considerably improve one’s health conditions. Some of those tips are mentioned below:
- Limited usage of citrus and acidic food such as lemons. Oranges, Acetic acid (Vinegar) and tomatoes.
- Avoid eating at untimely occasions. Following a proper diet can help reduce acid reflux.
- Do not sleep within 3 hours of a meal.
- Reduce alcohol consumption and smoking.
- Limit consumption of caffeine and carbonated drinks.
- Avoid stress. It can trigger heartburn.
- Exercise and workout can reduce the acids inside the body.
- Avoid tight clothing and loosen your belts esp. after meal.
Acid Reflux or Heartburn is a common sleep disrupting disorder. It can have severe impacts on the chest if not looked after properly. It can be controlled if proper measures are ensured.
